Tips of the week

Planting season about to be upon us...You should be well into your planning stages now, on what you may want to plant in your garden and around your home...Planning a vegetable garden this year is a must..This past week we have been getting many requests from homeowners on plants and shrubs for screening out their neighbor's yards from their own...It seems like many people are staying home this year because of the economy and are not liking what they see is in their back yard...Many homeowners are therefore looking for more privacy...Who can blame them...We have several great ideas on green screening...

There is the old standby, the privet hedge...These are very hardy and and when mature provide a very good hedge...The leaves are very full during the warm season, and last quite long into the cold season...However in deep winter they lost their leaves...They must also be trimmed yearly to keep their shape...Many birds however seek refuge from the scavages of winter in their protective branches...

Another green in the summer and brown in the winter are perennial grasses...The popular ones like Japenese silver grass can grow up to seven foot tall and make spectacular showings all season and especially in the fall, with their colorful plumes...Planted in rows they really look good...There are many types of grasses available, ranging in heights from twelve inches to twelve feet tall...They are perennial so they come up every year, fuller then the year before...They must however be cut back in early spring to make room for the new spring growth...The birds also feed on the seeds in the winter...An excellent choice...

Another choice is evergreen type shrubs such as arborvites and leyland cypress...These make excellent hedge rows as they retain their green color throughout the four seasons...However if you have a deer problem, planting arborvites is like putting out candy for the critters...Deer eat them with gusto and will reduce a arborvitie to a broomstick very rapidly...A great hedge if you have no deer in you area...

The best choice we have found for a privacy screen is Leyland Cypress...Part of the cypress family of shrubs, this is a very rapid growing plant which is very deer resistant...You can plant a one or two gallon pot and see amazing growth the first year...There is no need to plant large expensive ball and burlap plants...Keep them well watered the first year and you can get almost two foot of growth on them...Once they are established they require very little care...Very disease resistant and the screening is excellent...We recommend them very highly...

Stop in and talk with either Dave or Walt and let them help you find a hedge which is right for your conditions...We strive always to give you the most up to date plant information to you, so you can get maximum enjoyment out of the plants and flowers you purchase from us...

Until next time, thanks again...Walt G.
